Cycling Teams Reformation
UCI would reform cycling teams in order to improve cycling as sport. Cycling teams which usually named with brand names would be split into commercial teams which bearing brand names and club teams which bearing city and region names. The reasons to reform cycling teams are to improve competition quality, reduce domination from certain teams and globalize cycling as sport. Cycling teams would be diverse which would cater different types of cyclists around the world. Two different cycling team types would change cycling in few decades.
Commercial teams are cycling teams which are competing on international and continental levels which competing for commercial purposes. Commercial teams are named after brands which are coming from different fields, from construction to retail. Commercial teams consist cyclists from different countries for business and marketing reasons. Commercial teams are for-profit sports teams which mostly focus on commercial aspects. Commercial teams on cycling have similar format with motor sports like Formula 1 and football.
Club teams are cycling teams which are competing on local, regional and national levels which are competing for social purposes. Club teams are named after city or region of origin. Club teams consist cyclists from one or few cities or regions in one country. Club teams are non-profit and sometimes semi-commercial sports teams which mostly focus on social aspects although they also considering commercial aspects. Club teams on cycling have similar format with athletic clubs and winter sports clubs like cross country skiing.
Commercial teams are divided into WorldTeam, ProTeam, Continental and Regional divisions. WorldTeam division consists 18 cycling teams from different countries. ProTeam division consists 54 cycling teams from different countries, they are 24 teams from Europe, 8 teams from America, 8 teams from Asia, 8 teams from Africa and 6 teams from Oceania. Continental division consists 2-12 cycling teams each country, strong countries and countries with large populations would have more teams. Regional division consists 4-24 cycling teams each country with the similar allocation with Continental division teams.
Club teams are the cycling teams which belong to certain city or region. Club teams are more patriotic and nationalistic, compared with commercial teams which are international and globalized. Regionalism and ethnocentrism are common on club teams, but there are also club teams which are plural. Each city and region would have at least two cycling clubs, larger cities and regions would have up to 12 cycling clubs.
Club teams are available for all cycling disciplines, from road cycling to cycle ball for both men and women who would belong in the similar club team. One team on club teams consists 16 riders, only half from professional commercial teams which consist up to 32 riders. On races, there are 8 riders from each team for club teams which is similar with the future road cycling races which would known as The Eights which is similar with The Elevens on football.
UCI also has regions which dividing countries according to subcontinental divisions for cycling development. Every region has distinct characteristics and challenges. UCI has 27 different regions in order to globalize cycling as sport.
